Southwest Calgary spans Calgary's most topographically diverse quadrant, from inner-city river valleys to the city's western edge along the Bow River and Elbow River escarpments, with elevations ranging from 1,050 to 1,260 metres. This elevation range creates four distinct winter operational zones across the quadrant's 14 communities:

• High-Elevation Ridge Communities (1,200–1,260 m) – Signal Hill, Springbank Hill, Aspen Woods, West Springs. These neighborhoods are fully exposed to NW and W Chinook winds, with snow fences and windrows forming quickly on wide collectors like 17th Avenue SW, Glenmore Trail, and Crowchild Trail. Homes on corner lots facing these arterials experience 2–3× deeper drifts than interior streets.

• Mature Inner-SW Plateaus (1,050–1,100 m) – Killarney, Altadore, Beltline, Mount Royal, Elbow Park, Garrison Woods. Partially sheltered by mature trees and river valleys, these communities experience moderate drifting but increased refreeze risk on shaded pavement and pathway transitions near the Elbow River and Bow River.

• River-Valley Communities (1,050–1,080 m) – Garrison Woods, Elbow Park. Low-lying, shaded pathways create a distinct refreeze hazard where meltwater pools during Chinooks and freezes into sheet ice overnight on sidewalk aprons and driveway transitions.

• Established Suburban Communities (1,100–1,180 m) – Bridlewood, Canyon Meadows, Oakridge. Wide collector loops with bus-route priority snow clearing; moderate wind exposure with rapid meltwater runoff on established pavement.
