Killarney sits on a gently rolling plateau at 1,080 metres elevation, an established inner-city SW community. The neighborhood's exposed streets along 17th Avenue and Crowchild Trail catch the full force of northwest Chinook winds, creating deep windrows on wide collectors like 17th Avenue SW, Crowchild Trail, and 37th Street SW. Open corridors along these arterials act as wind tunnels, with corner lots facing these roads seeing 2–3× deeper drifts than interior streets.

The shallow coulee depressions near 33rd Street, 26th Street, and Richmond Road create a distinct refreeze hazard. Rapid Chinook thaws send meltwater pooling along pathway transitions, which freeze into sheet ice overnight. North-facing driveways – common on east-west streets along the northern and southern boundaries – stay in shadow for 6–8 hours in winter, creating persistent black-ice patches that don't melt until late afternoon. We plan extra time for these shaded zones and bring targeted de-icing equipment to handle the Killarney plateau's unique freeze-thaw cycle.
