Elbow Park sits on a low-lying river terrace hugging a tight bend of the Elbow River, with a subtle ridge along the northern boundary near Council Way. The river-adjacent low ground creates cold air pooling and lingering ice on shaded sections, especially on north-facing driveways and laneways close to the riverbank. The open river corridor acts as a wind channel during blizzards, loading snow against east- and north-facing fences, garage doors, and pathway connections that run parallel to the river.

The mature tree canopy and river proximity create a distinct refreeze hazard. Shaded streets and north-facing driveways under mature trees refreeze quickly after Chinook melt or midday sun, especially on internal crescents and laned properties where sun exposure is limited. Meltwater from gentle slopes tracks toward the river and pools in low spots near pathway underpasses and trailhead parking areas, freezing overnight into black ice on sidewalk aprons and pathway segments. We plan extra time for these shaded zones and bring targeted de-icing equipment to handle the river valley's unique freeze-thaw cycle.
