Garrison Woods sits on former military parade grounds at 1,048 metres elevation, with flat, open internal blocks and gentle grading toward the Elbow River valley. The neighborhood's flat, open layout means wind can sweep across with few topographic barriers, loading snow against west- and north-facing fences, garage pads, and rear lane gates. Tree-lined streets provide some wind buffering but also create shade pockets where packed snow and slush linger longer on sidewalks and driveway aprons.

The gentle slopes toward the river create a distinct meltwater channeling hazard. Rapid Chinook thaws send meltwater tracking toward 20 Street and Stanley Park, creating localized ponding at low spots in laneways and pathway connections that freeze into sheet ice overnight. Shaded internal streets and north-facing driveways under mature tree canopies refreeze quickly after daytime melt, especially on narrower residential crescents and shared lane systems. We plan extra time for these shaded zones and bring targeted de-icing equipment to handle the urban village's unique freeze-thaw cycle.
