Edgemont is Calgary's largest residential community and sits at the city's highest residential elevation – up to 1,245 metres – on the northwestern extension of Nose Hill. The neighborhood's exposed ridge-top streets along Country Hills and Shaganappi catch the full force of northwest Chinook winds, creating deep windrows on wide collectors like Country Hills Boulevard, Shaganappi Trail, and Edgemont Boulevard. Open corridors along these arterials act as wind tunnels, with corner lots facing these roads seeing 2–3× deeper drifts than interior streets.

The escarpment-side streets near Nose Hill Park and shallow coulee depressions along Edgedale Drive, Edgemont Boulevard, and the Nose Hill Park pathway system create a distinct refreeze hazard. Rapid Chinook thaws send meltwater pooling along steep slopes, which freeze into sheet ice overnight. North-facing driveways – common on east-west streets along the northern and southern boundaries – stay in shadow for 6–8 hours in winter, creating persistent black-ice patches that don't melt until late afternoon. We plan extra time for these shaded zones and bring targeted de-icing equipment to handle the ridge's unique freeze-thaw cycle.
