Royal Oak sits on a rolling ridge-and-coulee landscape bounded by Country Hills Boulevard, Stoney Trail, Crowchild Trail, and Rocky Ridge Road. The neighborhood's exposed ridge-top streets – especially in Royal Oak Estates and the upper Cascades – catch the full force of northwest Chinook winds, creating deep, wind-packed drifts across wide collectors like Royal Oak Drive and Royal Birch Boulevard. Homes on corner lots facing these arterials see 2–3× deeper drifts than interior streets.

The coulee system creates a distinct refreeze hazard. Meltwater channels along Royal Oak Way and Royal Birch View funnel runoff toward Mitra Natural Ravine, where shaded pavement and low-lying pathways hold cold air through the day. After a Chinook thaw, that water refreezes overnight into sheet ice on sidewalks and driveway aprons. North-facing driveways – common on east-west streets near Country Hills – stay in shadow for 6–8 hours in winter, creating persistent black-ice patches that don't melt until late afternoon, if at all.
