That dramatic shift creates a distinct winter microclimate that catches a lot of homeowners off guard. The ravine acts as a natural wind tunnel, channeling northwest winds straight through the valley and accelerating snow drift formation, especially on properties that back directly onto the coulee. North- and east-facing slopes take the heaviest snow loading, and the cold air that pools in the valley overnight means those drifts can set up like concrete by morning.
