Hawkwood sits on the southeastern slopes of Nose Hill at an elevated plateau of 1,230 metres. The neighborhood's exposed ridge-top streets along Country Hills and Sarcee catch the full force of northwest Chinook winds, creating deep windrows on wide collectors like Country Hills Boulevard, Sarcee Trail, and Hawkwood Boulevard. Open corridors along these arterials act as wind tunnels, with corner lots facing these roads seeing 2–3× deeper drifts than interior streets.

The escarpment-side streets near Nose Hill Park and shallow coulee depressions along Hawkwood Boulevard, Hawkstone Drive, and the Nose Hill Park pathway system create a distinct refreeze hazard. Rapid Chinook thaws send meltwater pooling along steep slopes, which freeze into sheet ice overnight. North-facing driveways – common on east-west streets along the northern and southern boundaries – stay in shadow for 6–8 hours in winter, creating persistent black-ice patches that don't melt until late afternoon. We plan extra time for these shaded zones and bring targeted de-icing equipment to handle the plateau's unique freeze-thaw cycle.
