The flat grades simplify plowing but also mean windrows left across driveway aprons can still cause vehicles to hang up if the snow is packed hard, particularly on laned properties and townhouse clusters. North-facing driveways and shaded sections under mature trees and between taller townhouse/condo blocks refreeze quickly after daytime melt, especially on internal crescents and laneways that get limited sun. Low-lying areas near McKnight Boulevard and 44 Street see meltwater pooling during Chinooks, then refreezing into black ice on adjacent sidewalk aprons and pathway segments near bus stops and retail access points.
